Standard Deviation describes the extent of how spread out the data for that distance is. For simplification purposes, one can assume 68% of race times fall within 1 standard deviation from the average, while 95% of race times will fall within 2 standard deviations from the average.

A horse capable of finishing faster than 2 standard deviations from the global average is exceptional!
